What Is a PRV (Pressure Reducing Valve)?

A pressure reducing valve helps regulate the pressure of water coming into your house from the county main line. The municipal water flowing into your house is often pushing through at a high and inconsistent rate. The pressure reducing valve helps lower the pressure and keeps the pressure consistent so that you can use the plumbing fixtures in your house safely.

Your pressure reducing valve is typically located next to your main shut off valve where the main water line enters the house. For many homeowners, this is in the basement or lowest level of the house in the utility area. A licensed plumber can visually inspect your pressure reducing valve to see it if it’s in good working order.

What Happens if my PRV Fails?

Pressure reducing valves should be replaced every 12 to 20 years. As the pressure reducing valve ages, it loses it’s ability to regulate the water pressure, causing harm to your appliances and plumbing fixtures. Many homeowners who complain of screeching noises or banging sounds in their plumbing system have a bad pressure reducing valve. Moreover, high water pressure can add to the cost of water, energy and waste water bills. If a PRV fails, it can leak and cause flooding in your basement or lower level. Be proactive and replace your pressure reducing valve before you suffer from unnecessary damage.

Water Service Replacement Special

For Heil Plumbing customers who are replacing their water service, we offer a special discount of $100 off for the installation of a new PRV. We highly recommend that you consider a new PRV along with your water service replacement. When your water service is replaced, the regular high water pressure from the county main line is restored and an aging PRV may not be able to handle the load.
